I am personally sick and tired of hearing about the environment and recycling, and I know a lot of other people who are too. It has been proved that recycling paper is actually worse for the environment than using fresh pulp, because sustainable forests that are grown specifically for the purpose and are used for fresh pulp have led to an increase in forestation. All this global warming hoopla is just a load of crap and there is very little credible research that proves that CO2 emissions are causing any weather changes, in fact there is a greater wealth of proof that climate change is a natural phenomenon that we humans have had very little effect on. Global warming itself is a myth; there is actual evidence that the planets temperature has remained stable and in fact cooled slightly in the last 7 years, despite a massive increase in CO2 output.
To be honest the people who aren't interested in recycling, locally sourced fruit and veg etc aren't interested full stop regardless of what is advertised or the campaigns run and those who are interested do their best regardless. Personally I find the constant advertising and campaigns a bit annoying and tiresome and I recycle because I believe it is the right thing to do, I support reducing carbon emissions more from a smog and air pollution issue than anything else so not sure if the campaigns are working
Maybe some people do not take it seriously (enough) because of the way things are portrayed by the media, that the Government are 'taxing everything out of sight' by stating 'environmental issues' - I call it 'greenwashing'. Some will also look to the East, thinking "what is the point, when I can see the damage being done by China and India?" (And The U.S, for that matter). Then there is the Governments disjoined thoughts for 'controlling' carbon emissions by forcing businesses to have 'carbon emission amounts' - which are then transferable, and can be sold from a business that does not use all their 'allowance' to one that produces more than their 'allowance', absolutely rediculous because the emissions will be the same, just from different sources! I have always re-used things, and mended rather than throwing out, I have always recycled whatever and whenever I can. I have always bought my foods as locally sourced as possible (I am fortunate because I live in the country and near the sea), as did my grandparents. I do not need 'nannying' into doing what I believe is absolutely natural (and right).
