Are councils right to force us to recycle

Are councils right to force us to recycle
magsmorris
I was asked recently if it was right that our local council is to fine anyone who does not recycle things in the right bin and I suppose like most people I thought to start with what right had they to tell me what to do, then I thought of my children, my future grand kids, and there kids what kind of future are they going to have with all the waste in this world. If I can help by washing out some tins, bottles and putting used clothing in a bin so be it

I don't mind recycling at all, I'm quite happy to do my bit. We have a compost bin and are going to buy another one, as the compost is very useful for our garden. We have two recycling bins in which we can put plastic bottles, cartons, cardboard, paper, cans etc. We do not have bins for glass, we have to take that to the bottle-bank, I wish our council would supply us with bins for glass though. The amount that I actually throw into my ordinary rubbish bin has drastically reduced, and though it is still collected weekly, I could go up to four weeks before it would be full. The recycling bins are collected monthly. When I go shopping I take my own shopping bags, so do not need plastic carrier bags. Though I do sometimes order my shopping online from Asda, and they deliver it in carrier bags, but empty bags can be given to the driver to return to the store, or we can take them ourselves to put in the recycling bin at Asda. I don't find it any effort at all, and it only takes seconds to rinse out the containers that go into my recycling bin. I can't see the problem. None of us should have to be "forced" to do this. It is easy, no hardship, and many of us are doing our bit to help save this planet in our own small way. We can all do our bit, and hopefully help to make our world a better place for our future generations to inherit. I remember years ago, before plastic bags, we used to get our shopping put into brown paper carrier bags with string handles, but they could get soggy and collapse it it rained. Best course of action, buy re-usable bags, string bags, shopping bags and take them to the shops with you. As I was growing up everyone took their own bags/baskets to the shops, and most people then had to walk or go on the bus, cars were scarcer then too.

Although it can be an inconvienience to sort all your recyclables, it soon becomes a way of life. It is important to reduce the amount of rubbish being buried in landfill sites. We have to recycle to sustain the planet for future generations. I also think that maufacturers and supermarkets could do more. The manufacturers by making sure that all packaging is recyclable and the supermarkets by following the example of the USA by giving out paper sacks instead of plastic bags to pack our shopping.

I live at home with my mum, and before they started to ask us to recycle my mum started anyway. We recycle paper cans jars , what ever else can be recycled. She says that since she started to recycle it has saved how much rubbish she throws out. I think she does it now more out of habit. It wouldnt hurt to do a bit of recycling but it is annoying walking it to the recycle bins every couple of days. But every little helps these days.

I think they do have a right provided they give you the resources to actually recycle ie bins and collection. We make such a mess and create so much landfill that I think we all have an obligation to recycle when we can and that the council is taking action to prevent us from running out of landfill room otherwise they will have to use land they may have put aside for development, parks etc for new landfill space. Also they can make some money out of recycling the materials so it would prevent higher increases in our taxes due to them having to dump everything and cover the costs.

yes, you have a responsibilty to look after this planet whether you like it or not and if you have kids then you automatically should want to protect their future. Just think if we didn't recycle how much more rubbish there'd be!

I think councils are trying to make it easier for us to recycle; we have a black box for paper, glass and metal, which is collected fortnightly. We also have a wheelie bin for garden rubbish. This is such a useful thing to have - it's also collected fortnightly. The council also sold us compost bins very cheaply. Unfortunately they don't collect plastic or cardboard. At the moment I can take plastic to school and there's a place about 2 miles away where I can take cardboard. I feel so guily binning yellow pages - but don't know what else to do with them as no one seems to want them.

Ii think we should all be made to recycle because once you start doing it it just becomes a way of life you actually do it without thinking about it and when you see how much of your rubbish you can recycle it inspires you to look round for more, we now have a full size wheelie for recyclables which is collected every two weeks and into it you can put all your recyclables, except of course garden refuse, which goes into a different one, this includes paper, cardboard, plastics, cans and glass and we have a small wheelie for ordinary rubbish which is collected weekly but actually only needs to be collected fourtnightly.and the garden refuse is collected the opposite week to the other recyclables.
