Yes, learned through swimming with family/friends and also at school, at first only in the summer months at junior school in a freezing cold outside pool then later swimming lessons all year in the heated indoor high school pool. I say 'lessons' but we were largely left to amuse ourselves at one end of the high school pool while our teacher concentrated on her 'star pupils' at the other end, but that suited us well and we always had a great laugh. Our local aqua park has two giant flumes and must admit I get quite a buzz launching myself down them as hard as possible to get some speed up before landing in the plunge pool at the end; there's a timer clock above the plunge pool and I keep trying to beat my partner's time - yes, know that's pathetic at our age but still fun!

I used to enjoy swimming in the sea as a teenager, but that was a long time ago, I may be able to manage a doggie paddle if I had to, with all the flooding, it might be a good idea to start visiting the local swimming pool to find out.

Yes. I learnt to swim when I started primary school. At secondary school I sat and passed my CPR and life saving qualifications even though I have never had a job that required the qualification. I am a very confident swimmer and enjoy swimming for pleasure. Its a nice thought that if I ever was in a situation where I had to I can dive in or swim to save myself. I think its really important and one of those things you can learn, not use for years and still remember what to do and how to do it.

I regret to say, I can't. We didnt have swimming lessons when I was at school, and though my dad was a good swimmer, he was always working ,so didnt get the chance to teach us.As an adult, I have avoided learning, as I am a little afraid of water. My older sister took herself along to the baths when she was quite small, but quickly came home again,as there was a balcony on the first floor overlooking the pol, and she thought she would have to dive off it! She did learn to swim eventually.I am very grateful that my daughter was taught to swim at school.

Yes - I fell into a river whilst 'building a dam' when i was about 6 years old! When I joined the Royal Navy I was a very good swimmer (won medals), and could swim a mile fully clothed. I also qualified as a diver. I am not able to swim as well or as far as I used to be able to, age and lack of fitness, but I am still a qualified 'life saver'. Strangely, I can swim better underwater than I can on the surface (with or without equipment).

I can swim but only because I am afraid of drowning. I am not the world's most elegant or powerful swimmer but it gets my from one side of the pool to another. I leaned in the days when the pool was freezing cold and at only 2ft tall in 3ft I couldn't touch the bottom without my head going under. The swimming teacher also had a bad habit of pushing us poor kids of the side. I have never liked to swim in the sea because I can never tell how deap the water is and I hate the sand moving under my feet. The last time I went to the local swimming pool it was filthy. There was a scum mark around the edge of the water and the floors were dirty from people's shoes. It didn't inspire me to use the pool.

No, I'm afraid to say I cannot swim and have no inclination to learn as I'm terrified of water. (yowzer we are so alike its uncanny) I won't go on boats and hate going over bridges with water underneath! We never had swimming at school, there were very few swimming baths back in those days. Perhaps if we did I would have learned but not now. My family think I'm so scared of water because I was 'dunked' as a witch in a former life. Nice!!

Yes i can swim, and have upto 1500m for distance swiming awatds and my gold life savers' award. In Britain though this concentrates on inland waters rather than the sea and i have to say that i am not very confident in the sea. My husband once took me out into the surf on Australia's sun shine coast and i got dumped by a breaker, it felt like my eyes were exploding and i'm in no hurry to repeat the experience. So now i just paddle when it comes to the sea. These days, in LOndon at leat, the children don't get much by way of swimming lessons and most that i know are far from confident swimmers. In comparison to children to other areas they are quite backward, and it was quite worrying when we went to a pool in Birmingham how bad my children were in comparison to the local kids.
