Hi, you used to be on all the time when I first joined, it was like you and Sarah Stokes were the mainstays of the site. I had a bit of a gap but I've been looking in quite regularly for a couple of months now and managed to miss you each time. Take Care :O)

Saw your message recently. I'm glad you got the NI number sorted. I tend to believe in the Conspiracy of Cock Ups more than the Conspiracy of Conspirators - human nature tends toward economy of effort. Didn't want to participate in on this site for quite a while. I put someone's hackles up (my bad), apologised and was accused of being an internet stalker hiding under goodness knows how many pseudonyms as if I don't have more pressing things to get on with in the flesh and blood world. Well, Toluna, being as it is, interesting, but much like a school yard I had a feeling that if I said anything further there a daily mail style campaign would get going without anybody bothering to follow up how the whole blessed debacle began. Might contribute from time to time though. All the best, bookish

I was answering a topic today and it got me thinking about old programmes that I haven't seen since a child. I used to like Sapphire and Steel, though I must have been about ten when it finished and I don't think it has been repeated since; maybe it would look pretty poor to see again now.

They seem to repeat some things endlessly, while ignoring others. Are there things that you haven't seen for years that you'd like to see repeated? The Owl Service? A For Andromeda? Quaternass? The Tomorrow People?

Prompted (or shamelessly ripped off, depending on your view) by cazza88, what are your favourite cover versons of songs? Ones that are better than the original?

I feel I have to exclude Bob Dylan here, as his voice has been so erratic over the years that almost anybody could produce a better version of some of his songs.

Some of my favourites are Steve Hillage's cover of Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man", Mettalica's cover of Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey In The Jar" (they did a good version of Blue Oyster Cult's "Astronomy" on the same LP) and Eric Clapton's cover of J.J. Cale's "Cocaine." There are many, many more as good as, or better than the oiginals...

Or for so startlingly different that they could be another song, how about George Harrison's strange Hare krishna version of the Everly Brothers "Bye Bye love"? Of Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash singing Bob Marley's "Redemption Song"?

Go on, what great covers come to mind for you?

I guess you have to be my age or older to recall Green Shield stamnps. I recall my mother going to the Green Shield Stamp shop in Peterborough to trade in a seemingly ridiculous number of stamps for a toaster or some such item. Did anybody ever save enough to get anything big?

Raised this topic bcause my mother was going through her bureau and found books of Green Shield stamps, and bread and milk tokens for a long defunct south London co-operative. I was too young to use milk tokens in my area, but I've just discovered from someone that certain Co-Ops were still using milk tokens in the 90s. When did yours stop?
