Nations around the world spend BILLIONS, and will soon be spending TRILLIONS, on space exploration. Yet people are still dying everyday on Earth from hunger and disease due to malnutrition. I wonder whether we can justify money spent on space exploration before tackling world hunger. What are your thoughts?

Did you watch Jamie's Fowl Dinners last week and, if so, what did you think of the methods used to intensively raise chickens for eggs and meat? For caged hens (economy eggs), there's four or five birds to a wire-floored cage about the size of a microwave oven. The cage is 50cm wide and a bird's wingspan is about 76cm so they don't even get to stretch their wings during their entire life. The millions of male chicks hatched are either gassed or shredded to death in a mechanical macerator. For intensively raised 'meat' chickens, thousands of them are crammed in one shed with no natural daylight, standing in their own droppings causes hock burns (painful leg ulcers) from the ammonia and they are so cramped for space they hardly move. They are slaughtered at about 36 days old; a chicken in the wild can live 5 to 7 years. Surely it's worth paying a bit more for free range eggs and chicken to know the birds have had a better life. I noticed in the programme the women who said they couldn't afford it were all about five stones overweight - maybe they could show a little pity and cut down somewhere else in their shopping.
