I remember reading a little which ago about an artist who created some unbelievably beautiful paintings for a church, but whose private life was reprehensible. A little research produced the following information: Eric Gill, the sculptor, apparently committed incest and bestiality, and further back in history Caravaggio was a murderer and Wagner an anti-Semite. How do you reconcile the splendour of their work with the horror of their lives, especially when these works are of a religious nature or displayed in religious buildings?

Not necessarily..I appreciate an artist's work, often before I know anything about their lifestyle.

I believe that there are some genuine ones out there..but there are an awful lot more charlatans, and those are the ones that you hear about more.
