When crimes are committed, especially awful crimes, we are all very quick to say these people should be hung or put away forever and the key thrown away. Now, think about this. I have a disabled son and I know many other parents with children with varying disabilities ranging from autism to mild learning problems. Autism takes on many forms and can be challenging to cope and deal with as are other mental and neurological problems. Some times, these problems are not and have not been diagnosed correctly if at all. These children grow up and a in some cases, and I will stress a very tiny number can be lost in society. On rare occassions these people can be capable of committing awful crimes which to them are quite normal and do actually satisfy their mental health problem. Looking at it from this angle, should we still say, if a mental health problem has been the trigger for a crime, that these people should still be hung, locked up forever and the key thrown away? It is very easy to jump to conclusions about terrible crimes that have been committed and the people who commit them. I agree that not all are committed by people with mental health or neurological problems (although there has to be some mental problem to murder your own children or comes to that, any human) but for the small proportion which are, do you still believe what you first thought? Or, thinking about it more, should these people be given the help and medication and care which can help them? Should society who allowed these people to fall through the net be the ones who are punished? Often it is not these people's faults who commit the crime but it is the people who are left to care for them after their parents have gone/died/washed their hands of them because they can't cope any more. Society is very quick to condem these people without actually knowing the real facts about their mental health status. This is very rarely mentioned when the news broadcasts these crimes. Why? because it wouldn't make such a story.

The truth is that society today will not and should not forgive certain crimes. Crimes that contain brutal physical assualt, molestation, any sexual assault on a child under 18 years of age. These people cannot be rehabilitated therefore we as a society have the right to be rid of such things! Today the world stands up to complain about arab countries who's law seem barbaric, but when you look at our laws in the western society and see an adult/priest molest children as young as 2 and do not get punished or the punishment does not fit the crime then I know which I would choose to punish that person!!!!!!!!!
