There was a girl I used to fancy at college called Dawn, so yes it's quite a nice, earthly sort of name. One thing that also came from having a girl named that in college though was "I was up at the crack of dawn" "I woke at the crack of dawn" type jokes. Always worth a rethink if you can't handle that for your kids!

Hi, Dawn wouldn't be a favourite name of mine. For one thing, I don't tend to like single syllable names much anyway (not sure why, but there you go!). For another, I tend to dislike names that can in any way be misunderstood gender wise. Now - obviously if you see "Dawn" written down, then you will know that it relates to a female. But if someone says "Dawn" then it's entirely possible that someone else will hear "Don" and assume the person being spoken about is male. Some will think I'm weird for thinking that way, but having been given a name (AND a middle name) that could be either gender (although usually spelt differently for each gender), it's a particular bugbear of mine. I've been fairly careful to give all four of my kids names that can't really be mistaken for the other gender, although having said that, one or two of them could end up with abbreviated versions that COULD be mistaken. Their choice at that point though, they don't HAVE to go with the abbreviated version.

My parents gave me a straight forward name hoping no one would shorten it. In fact, I get called Dawnest, Dawny, Dawnlets, Dawnchen and Dawn-san. Its a nice name conveying the start of a new day but I was horrified when I recently read a magazine poll that said "Dawn was considered to be a chav name along with Sharon, Tracy, Kylie, Britney, Chardonnay and a few others. How dare they? Hmph! Anyway, all the Dawns that I have ever come across have been wonderful people!
