I hope all British Toluna members are aware of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Chicken Out Campaign, whereby the celebrity chef hopes to encourage all of us to shun the extremely cheap '2 for £5' chicken offers in our local supermarkets, in favour of free range options. There was a 3 part series on Channel 4 recently, following Hugh in his attempts to sway the opinions of people in Dorset. Myself, I was completely swayed by his arguments, and vowed never to eat anything but free range chicken again. However, I was dismayed to find that my local branch of Tesco in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear had not one single free range chicken on the shelf. I'm interested to know other people's experiences in their own branches of the major supermarkets.

I can't help but feel bad about myself finding it hard to be able to afford the nicer-end-of-the-market foods these days after recent price rises, yet there are people so much more worse off than me and my family. With us it may be basics and the odd treat each week or so, but there are stilll people in this world who can't even have the basics!

given the choice (money no problem), would you prefer to shop in a supermarket or small independent stores? i just love shopping in the village shops and am lucky to have the traditional butcher, baker, chemist and fishmonger within walking distance of my home. it's so much more presonal, and you can have a bit of a chat and catch up on the local gossip. i like the idea of supporting local business and believe that i get better quality in fresh food from the local stores, than mass produced supermarket produce. however, i would struggle without my monthly supermarket shops. supermarkets offer a choice not available at a local level and can offer discounts that smaller businesses can't compete with.
